I want to talk a minute about cornbread. I’m sure you’ve had some, so you shouldn’t need a description of the taste, but I am going to describe it to you anyway! Then I will tell you how to make it.
It is by far one of the tastiest ways to use up that half of a leftover bag of cornmeal. Personally, I have never tired of making it and eating it. Always a buttery flavor and soft with a slight crunch of the crust around the edges. Are you salivating yet?
When you know how to make cornbread right (and I’m darn sure that I do) then you have access to a delicious staple food that is perfect with just so many dishes!
Follow my 6 steps below and you will be impressing your family and guest for years to come. Enjoy!
1. Acquire a Cast Iiron Skillet
They are inexpensive, durable, and easily heated on the stovetop or in the oven. This is a must for cooking delicious cornbread and many other dishes. As you can see in the above picture, that is a picture of one of the cast iron skillets I use for my cornbread. I love to cook in cast iron pots, dutch ovens, and cast iron frying pans.
2. Get Yourself a Good Recipe
The recipe is the foundation of any good cornbread. I especially love using a recipe that has been shared with me, tried and true. For example, I loved using my mom’s cornbread recipe until I discovered a new way (for me) to make my cornbread, and it is delicious! It was quite by accident that I discovered this recipe. I will get to that a little later😉
3. Gather the Ingredients
Get your White Lily Self-Rising buttermilk cornmeal (or whatever cornmeal you use), buttermilk, mayonnaise, butter. I know this sounds crazy, but trust me on this, it is an awesome combination!
4. Measure the Ingredients
It’s better to go ahead and measure out everything before you start the mixing process. This helps to save you time and ensures that you are following the recipe correctly and makes mistakes less likely to happen. Trust me, once you start doing this process, it will become second nature to you and you will be glad that you did.
5. Mixing it All Together
Now comes the best part, mixing it all together one ingredient at a time. First, you want to pour the measured cornmeal into your mixing bowl, Second, add the butter (real butter is best), now take a dough blender and mix it into the cornmeal until it’s crumbly. Doing this before using a mixer will help it to mix up better. Third, add the mayonnaise and the whole buttermilk and mix until well incorporated. This is where I like to use my KitchenAid mixer, especially if I am fixing a big pone of cornbread.
6. Bake the Cornbread
You want to pour the cornbread batter into a greased iron skillet and cook (depending on the size of skillet you are using) in a pre-heated oven from 450 degrees to 500 degrees for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Once that delicious cornbread gets done, enjoy!
I know you are probably thinking these ingredients don’t sound good together, but I promise you, this will be the best tasting cornbread that you have ever put in your mouth!
I came by this recipe quite by accident when I ran out of eggs and oil. So, I thought, “Mayonnaise has eggs and oil in it, hmmm why not try the mayo., buttermilk, and butter?” And just like that, my new buttermilk cornbread recipe was born. My family loves it and so will yours.
Below you will find two videos of my cooked cornbread…
