Baking Supplies: The Best of the Best

** This post also contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you purchase a product after clicking on a link. Thank you!

As a baker, you know that having quality baking supplies is key to creating delicious treats. That’s why it’s important to choose the best baking supplies out there. Here are some of my favorites:

1. KitchenAid Mixer

A good mixer is essential for any baker. I love my KitchenAid mixer because it’s powerful and durable. The KitchenAid mixer comes with a variety of attachments for every baker’s needs. They have everything from metal meat grinders to slicer/shredders. I have the Slicer/Shredder Attachments, and I love it!

2. Wilton Cake Pans

A variety of pans is important for any baker. I love my Wilton cake pans because they make baking a breeze. They come in many shapes and sizes that every baker needs to have. Wilton has everything from cake pans to cookie sheets and everything in between.

3. McCormick Spices

Spices are a baker’s best friend. I love my McCormick spices because they always add great flavor to my recipes. My goodness, they have quite a variety of spices. Some of my favorites are Ground Ginger, Ground Cinnamon, Ground Cummin, Chili Powder, Ground Mustard, and Smoked Paprika. Just to name a few! I could keep going!

4. Nordic Ware Baking Sheet

A good baking sheet is a must-have for any baker. I love my Nordic Ware baking sheets because they heat evenly and never stick. With Nordic Ware baking sheets your goodies will rise up and bake evenly. These pans are very durable and will last for years to come.

5. Reynolds Parchment Paper

This is a must-have for baking cookies and other treats. It keeps them from sticking to the pan and makes cleanup a breeze. I use parchment paper (Cookie Baking Sheets) every time I make cookies now. The cookie baking sheets are pre-cut so you can place them right on your cookie sheet add cookies and pop them oven. Then you just throw the paper away and no need to wash the pan!

6. Measuring Cups and Spoons

Another must-have for any baker is a good set of measuring spoons and cups. I like the Pyrex 3-Piece Measuring Cup Set because the cups are made from glass and can be used for both wet and dry ingredients. Easy to read measurements in cups, ounces, and millimeters. Curved spout for easy and precise pouring and they are dishwasher safe and oven-safe, so they can go from prep to oven to dishwasher without a problem.

7. Silicone Baking Mat

A silicone baking mat is another great tool to have on hand. It eliminates the need for cooking spray, butter, grease, or oil and makes cleanup a snap. I love all the beautiful colors they come in. There are different sizes available and they also come in sets of 2-4.

8. Wilton Non-Stick 9″ x 13″ Cake Pan

If you’re looking for baking pans, I highly recommend the Wilton Non-Stick 9″ x 13″ Cake Pan. It’s my go-to pan for cakes, brownies, and bar cookies. It’s also dishwasher safe and some of the pans come with a lifetime warranty. And you can get the Wilton Non-Stick pan in sets of 3 or more.

9. Farberware Professional Silicone Whisks

Whisks are another great tool to have in your kitchen. I love my Farberware Silicone Whisks and use them a lot. In fact, I have used mine so much that I am in need of a new set. I use them in my non-stick pans when making gravy, sauces, salad dressing, and more. They perform well with high heat while protecting your pots and pans.

10. Nordic Ware Pizza Stone

If you bake a lot of pies as I do, then you are going to want to invest in a Pizza Stone. When I get my pies all mixed up and poured in my pie shell, I place my pie pan on the pizza stone. Put the pizza stone and pie pan in the center of the oven and bake at the temperature the recipe calls for. Your pie crust will bake evenly to a golden brown and your pie filling will be delicious.

There you have it, my awesome bakers, “Baking Supplies: The Best of the Best.” I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it for you.

5 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Baking

As an Amazon Associate, if you should click on any of my links, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

Hey, Ya’ll, did you know that we all get at least 5 things wrong when we bake? That’s right, even me! This week we are going to explore “5 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Baking.”

Baking is a science. It’s not an exact science, but there are guidelines that you need to follow to ensure your success. When you don’t follow these guidelines, your baking will most likely not turn out the way you want it to.

In this post, we are going to explore 5 of the most common baking mistakes that people make. So, if you are guilty of any of these mistakes, don’t worry, you are not alone!

5 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Baking

  1. Not reading the recipe all the way through before you start baking. This is probably the biggest one that I see all the time. It is absolutly essential that you read the recipe in its entirity before you start start mixing everything together. This is so you want make mistakes like missing steps and ingredients. This can be a disaster! Believe me I have done this and ended up having to pour out the ingredents and start all over again! Not only did I waste time, but I wasted money because I had to discard my ingredients becasue I messed up.😫

2. Not measuring the ingredients properly. This is another hazard that can be avoided if you will take the time to measure the ingredients correctly. For example, when I measure out my flour, I pour a little more than I need into my measuring cup and then take my offset stainless steel spatula and make the flour even with my measuring cup. That way I am sure if the recipe calls for one cup that’s what I have. I do the same thing if calls for two cups. PLEASE use your measuring cups and measuring spoons so that you know you are getting the right amount of ingredients.🙄

3.  Not preheating the oven or using the wrong oven temperature. Preheating your oven is one of the most important things you can do while baking and making sure you set it to the right temperature for whatever you are baking. Preheating the oven to the right temperature will bake your cake, cookies, pies, meat, etc. to a golden brown and bring all of those wonderful flavors together for an awesome taste. For example, if you don’t preheat your oven when baking a cake, it has to stay in longer and will make the cake very dense and heavy and dry it out.😲

4.  Using the wrong baking pan. This can be awful as well. Imagine cooking let’s say a birthday cake and you use too big of a pan it will look so thin and flat. Know how I know this? Yep, you guessed that right, I have done that crap before. No fun! Then of course I had to start all over again! I didn’t pay attention to what size pan the recipe called for when this happened to me. Case in point, read that recipe all the way through so you can avoid mistakes. Also, if you use too small of a pan, you will have the cake all on the sides of your pan and in the bottom of your oven.😡

5. Use baking soda instead of baking powder. This can also be a disaster in the making. Because these two are made up differently chemically speaking, this can be bad. So, if you use too much baking powder, instead of baking soda, your cake will taste bitter and won’t be as fluffy. If you use baking soda instead of baking powder you could wind up with a messy oven and a horrible tasting cake.😝

As you can see from reading the “5 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Baking,” how important it is to read your recipes all the way through before you start your mixing and baking process. These things are very easy to avoid if we will just stop and take the time to read our recipes.

I know that we live in a fast-paced world, but when it comes to cooking and baking, take your time slow down relax and enjoy what you are doing. You will make fewer mistakes and have a blast!

So, get out there and get your baking on and most of all enjoy!😉

Happy Baking,

Donna Kennedy🍰

How To Make Sugar Cookies

Chewy Sugar Cookies

Hey, Ya’ll, Baking with Donna is here today with a post that is fun, delicious, and perfect for the holiday season and throughout the year. I have created a recipe for sugar cookies, which are ideal for decorating for the season. When decorated with royal icing and sprinkles, these cookies are a beautiful gift or dessert. These cookies are very easy to make, but look complicated. I hope you enjoy it!

  • 1 ¼ cups unsalted butter, one stick
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  1. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar.
  2. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and salt and mix to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour a little at a time to create a soft dough.
  4. Place dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before rolling into a log shape.

These cookies are great to decorate with sprinkles, colored sugars, or soft cookies frosting. My favorite is just plain with nothing on them and of course a good cup of coffee!☕

Whip up a batch of them for the weekend and let me know what you think. I am positive you are going to love them and so will your family and friends. Enjoy!

From my family to yours, Happy New Year!🎉🎇🎉🎇

7 Delicious Tips for Baking with Your Kids

** This post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

If you’re a parent then you know how important it is to spend time with your children. What better way than to bake together? When you’re making delicious goodies together, you’re spending quality time and making wonderful memories. Baking can be a great way to teach your kids valuable skills for the future. Here are my 7 delicious tips for baking with your kids:

1. Be a cheerful example:

Happy Family

You can’t expect your child to have a good attitude if you don’t. If the kitchen is not a place of joy for you, then it’s not going to be a place of joy for them either. When my two daughters were little, I made sure that we had cookies or cakes at all our family gatherings. Most of the time we had both. I wanted my girls to associate the kitchen with good things, as well as with me!

2. Be prepared:

Be Prepared

Have your mixer and its attachments ready to go along with your cake pans already greased and floured. If using a recipe, have it out and if you have older children, have the child read over the recipe. Let them help you gather up the ingredients, measuring spoons, and measuring cups.

3. Have fun with the ingredients:

Let Them Get Their Hands Dirty

Have you ever noticed how baking allows us to play with food? Maybe that’s why kids love baking so much! So why not let them dive into a bag of chocolate chips and just go for it? It can be a great hands-on lesson in measurement too.

4. Get messy:

If you have a small child who won’t keep his or her hands out of the batter, all the better! Your little bakers might make quite a mess, but I can guarantee you they will be having fun. And so will you! 😂🤣😂

5. Let them take charge:

Girl and Boy Mixing Ingredients

If your child is old enough, they might enjoy being in charge of certain tasks such as measuring out the ingredients, mixing up the ingredients, or instructing the smaller siblings on how to pour the ingredients into the mixing bowl. Let him/her preheat the oven.

6. Set realistic expectations:

Don’t expect too much on first attempts: Fun and experimentation should be emphasized over perfection on first tries. Letting them do this will keep them engaged and wanting to bake with you again.

7. Choose recipes that are simple to make:

Simple Oatmeal Cookie Recipe

In the beginning, it’s best NOT to start with a recipe that has many steps or a lot of ingredients. It’s also best to use ingredients that your kids will enjoy eating. For instance, if they love lemon, choose a lemon cookie recipe. If they love peanut butter, choose a chocolate chip cookie recipe.

I have an easy and delicious cookie recipe that you and your children will love:

5 Tips to Baking with Your Grandkids

** This post also contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

Baking is something that I love to do with my grandkids, but can sometimes be frustrating to figure out how to make it work. With the help of my grandkids, I have come up with 5 Tips to Baking with Your Grandkids.

1. Let them help you and pick a recipe

Kids Picking Out Recipe

I know, I know, it is hard to teach a child to bake when you have things going on around you and on top of your counter. But, first and for most, insist that the little ones wash their hands before ya’ll get started. Let your grandchild pick out the recipe and help you with measuring and pouring the ingredients into a mixing bowl. When they are little, all you need them to do is stir, if they are older let them blend ingredients together. It makes them feel special and more engaged.

2. Have a neat area for baking

Clean as You Go

Everything else, stop! Have the kids clean up the area before you start baking. Have a place for everything and use it all. For example put flour in a sifter and put it back on the shelf after it is done being used. In fact, it would be a lot easier to go ahead and get the recipe and get all the ingredients measured out and ready before ya’ll start mixing things together.

3. Consider which task each child can do

Consider What They Can Do

The smaller children can help pour and stir the ingredients, while the older one(s) can read the recipe and help measure out the ingredients. As your grandkids help you, they will learn how to do things in order, like reading the recipe first, gather the ingredients, measuring out everything, and how to mix the ingredients according to the recipe. You can also teach your grandkids how to work together and take turns doing each task. You can teach them the importance of making sure they have all the ingredients before starting to bake.

4. Know that it will get messy and be ok with it

Kids Making a Mess Baking

Lord knows I can’t say anything about my grandkids being messy, because believe me I am too when it comes to baking! But I’m ok with that because they are children and it can and will get messy. When there is flour and sugar involved, it’s going to get on the counters and the floor. Let them help you clean up as you go. Don’t stress about it and just have fun. After all you are making beautiful memories to cherish for a lifetime with your babies.

5. Most of all be patient

Being Patient with Grandchild

If mistakes happen, and they probably will, don’t go postal! Let them know that mistakes are to be made and it’s ok. Teach them that’s how we learn and the next time they will know what to do to correct it. For example, you can show them what happens if you don’t spray your cake pans before pouring the cake batter into the pans or what happens if you don’t follow the recipe step by step. This will help them to be more aware of why the steps in a recipe are so important. You can also share some of your baking mishaps and have a great laugh. Let them know that no matter how long you have been cooking, mistakes are going to happen and it’s ok. Just learn from them and move on.

One more very important part of the baking…Share the goodies with the grandkids and praise them for doing such a good job. Ask them what they enjoyed most about baking with Nana. Most of all let them share their goodies with friends and family. Let them know you can’t wait to bake with them again.

I would love to hear from you about baking with your grandkids. Let me know how it went and share some pictures.

Below you will find 3 of my best cookie recipes that will be easy to make with your grandkids and they are very delicious. Enjoy!😋

Happy Baking,

Donna Kennedy 👩‍🍳
