Hey, Ya’ll, this week I am going to do a review on the 6 Most Popular Kitchen Aid Attachments. I have been an avid baker for many years. I began baking at the early age of 12 years old. Through the years, I have owned many brands of mixers and baking tools. I am proud to say that I currently own a 5-quart Classic Stand Mixer by Kitchen Aid

For the bakers out there, I’ve got some great news for you. One of the most important tools in any baker’s arsenal is a good mixer. And while many people turn to Kitchen Aid, it’s also a good idea to invest in some attachments.

  1. Egg whisk: This attachment helps make homemade meringues, whip cream and other dessert items.
  2. Kitchen Aid Fresh Prep Slicer/Shredder Attachment: Let’s you quickly and easily add fresh sliced or shredded ingredients to your salad such as cheese, fruits, cucumbers, and more.
  3. Pasta roller and cutter set: This is great for making your own pasta from scratch at home!
  4. Mixing blade:The mixing blade has a flat bottom to scrape against the sides of the mixing bowl and give you a thorough mix. It can also be used when you need to get in every nook and cranny of your mixing bowl.
  5. Kitchen Aid Spiralizer Attachment: This attachment allows you to Spiralize, Peel, Core, and Slice fruits such as Zucchini, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Beets, and more.

How to Use Wilton Bake Even Cake Strips

Wilton Bake Even Strips
Wilton Bake Even Strips

As an Amazon Associate, if you should click on any of my links, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

As a baker and a cook, I always find myself looking for ways to help me create even layers when baking and serving. If you’ve ever made homemade brownies or even a cake, then you know the struggle is real! Wilton Bake Even Cake Strips come in multiple sizes to allow you to bake cakes that are up to several inches tall.

You’ll want to be able to use the full range of heights when you’re baking cakes so you can make them as flat as possible, instead of domed. Wilton created these strips for this very reason and I find them to be helpful for my cakes.

The other reason you’ll want to use these strips when baking is because they are non-stick and make it much easier to pull the cake pans out of the oven. This can be a great time-saver, especially if you have several pans of cake in the oven, or if it’s a large layer cake.

I also find these strips to be a good value for the cost. They are made of a purple polyester strip and are oven safe up to 400°F.

When I first saw the Wilton Bake Even Strips, I was ecstatic! It was definitely a game-changer for me. They save you time and money. No more cutting off the little domes on my cakes. I felt like that I was wasting my cake.

Easy to use and clean, and so worth it, these bake-even strips are for all bakers, beginners, and pros alike. You will be wondering how you ever lived without them.

That’s why I’m sharing my favorite Baking With Donna tips for using the Wilton Bake Even Strips. Here’s how you use them. Enjoy!👩‍🍳

Tips on Using the Cake Strips

  1. Place the cake strips around the cake pans that you are going to use and tighten to fit pans. Then slip them off the pans.
  2. Soak the Wilton Bake Even Cake Strips in cold water for about 5 minutes.
  3. Wring most of the water out so they are still wet, but not dripping wet.
  4. Now set your pans down in them and secure the straps by pulling on them and inserting the strap into the first loop.
  5. Next pour your prepared cake batter into pans and place them in the oven and cook for the spesified time.
  6. Take pans out and put on cooling racks and cool for 5 minutes,
  7. Remove cake strips from pans and be amazed at the even cake layers with no “little domes!”
  8. Turn cakes out onto cooling racks to finish cooling and enjoying frosting cake layers that are even that you don’t have to cut off anymore!

Check out the short movie of my cakes after using the Wilton Bake Even Cake Strips. Enjoy!

Look how well my cake layers turned out!

How To Make Sugar Cookies

Chewy Sugar Cookies
Chewy Sugar Cookies

Hey, Ya’ll, Baking with Donna is here today with a post that is fun, delicious, and perfect for the holiday season and throughout the year. I have created a recipe for sugar cookies, which are ideal for decorating for the season. When decorated with royal icing and sprinkles, these cookies are a beautiful gift or dessert. These cookies are very easy to make, but look complicated. I hope you enjoy it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cups unsalted butter, one stick
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar.
  2. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and salt and mix to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour a little at a time to create a soft dough.
  4. Place dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before rolling into a log shape.

These cookies are great to decorate with sprinkles, colored sugars, or soft cookies frosting. My favorite is just plain with nothing on them and of course a good cup of coffee!☕

Whip up a batch of them for the weekend and let me know what you think. I am positive you are going to love them and so will your family and friends. Enjoy!

From my family to yours, Happy New Year!🎉🎇🎉🎇

How to Freeze a Homemade Cake (Without/With Frosting!)

Freezing Cake Layers
Freezing Cake Layers

As an Amazon Associate, if you should click on any of my links, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

Hey, Ya’ll! Have you ever wondered if you can freeze a homemade cake a few weeks before the celebration or freeze the leftover cake after a party? Keep reading to find out….

If you are like me and love to bake homemade cakes around the holidays, sometimes I can have some leftovers and really just don’t want to discard them because well it’s really delicious! Besides, I love to eat cake for breakfast with my coffee. I know, I know, not the most nutritious but it’s really good with the coffee!! ☕

Now, if you don’t want to eat your cake with your coffee in the mornings for breakfast, guess what? You can put it in the freezer and enjoy it a little longer! Hard to believe, right?

You can even bake homemade cakes ahead of a party or any occasion and freeze them to save yourself some time. Check out my tips below. Enjoy!

This is How You Freeze Unforsted Cake Layers

Wrap Cake Layers in Saran Wrap
Wrap Cake Layers in Saran Wrap

Storing your cake layers in your freezer is easier than you think. First of all, you want to make sure that your cake layers are completely cooled off before you wrap them in the saran wrap. This is a very important step as you do not want to trap any steam in when you wrap up your cake layers.

Wrapping them in a double layer of plastic wrap does not hurt, in fact, I encourage it. (This acts as a double layer of protection). Next, you will want to wrap them in a layer of aluminum foil. You may also use plastic freezer bags that are resealable. Gallon bags work best and can accommodate a 9 by 9-inch cake layer.

Once your cake layers have cooled and you have them wrapped tightly with the plastic wrap or in a gallon resealable freezer bag, make sure to write on the label what flavor of cake you have and the date you put it in the freezer. This is important to note because your cake layers should last from 2-3 months in the freezer and you will certainly want to know what flavor you will be serving!

It’s a very good idea to place your cake layers on a cookie sheet until they are frozen to maintain their flat surface for easy layering and frosting when you thaw them out. This will also make it easier to stack them on top of each other to save space in your freezer.

Tips from Donna’s Kitchen

Tip #1. You want to freeze your cake as soon as it’s cooled off enough so that it will still be fresh and you have time to enjoy it during its prime.

Tip #2. Make sure to wrap it tight as you can in the plastic wrap to help maintain its freshness and use double plastic wrap for an added layer of protection along with the aluminum foil on the outside of the wrap.

Tip #3. Not thawing the cake layers all the way out will make frosting them a lot easier. This will help seal in some of the crumbs (crumb coat) so you won’t have as many crumbs in your frosting. (I would thaw them on the counter for about one hour before you start decorating and they should still be cold enough to frost).

Freezing Frosted Homemade Cakes

Freezing A Homemade Frosted Cake
Freezing a Homemade Frosted Cake

Yes, you can freeze your frosted cakes! But, (yes there’s a but) you have to make sure your frosting can withstand being frozen. The top two frostings that work wonderfully being frozen are “Cream Cheese”, and “American Buttercream.” Two of my favorite ones to work with!

After you get your cake all frosted and decorated, you will want to place it in the freezer for an hour. This will allow for your frosting and decorations to set. Once you are sure everything is set, then take it out of the freezer (and just like your unfrosted layers) and wrap it in two layers of plastic wrap snug as you can, followed by aluminum foil.

Just like your unfrosted cake layers, you will want to get your cake into the freezer as soon as you can to maintain its freshness and enjoy it at its prime as well.

When you get ready to unthaw your cake, you may do so on your counter or in your fridge overnight. NOTE: Your frozen cake if wrapped properly can last up to 6 months in your freezer!

Frostings that do not work well being frozen are:

  • Whipped Cream frosting
  • Royal Icing
  • Meringue Frostings

NOTE: These frostings are best when made fresh and used when you make them.

How to Freeze Single Slices of Cake

Single Slice Of Chocolate Cake
Single Slice of Chocolate Cake

This is so easy to do! All ya have to do is wrap the slices of cake in plastic wrap individually or put them on a plate and wrap the plastic wrap around the plate tight. You will want to make sure you do a double layer of the plastic on the layers as well to protect them from freezer burn. The cake slices should last 2-3 months in your freezer. Now you can keep on enjoying your cake a little longer!🤤

I hope you enjoyed reading about “How to Freeze a Homemade Cake (Without/With Frosting!)”as much as I enjoyed writing this article for you.

Now that you know what to do for your next big get together, get baking girl!😉

The Joy of Baking

The Joy Of Baking
The Joy of Baking

As an Amazon Associate, if you should click on any of my links, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

Mom And Daughter Baking

My mom is the one who got me into baking. I can remember licking the bowl after she was done making a cake. I’m not exactly sure why I was doing that, but I’m sure it was because it tasted good. I don’t know how old I was and I don’t remember it being something that my mom made me do. She probably thought I did it on my own, but I don’t know. The point is, she taught me how to bake, and it has become a passion of mine.

Family Gathered Around The Table

Because of my mom, I love to bake for my family for many reasons. I love to see the anticipation on their faces as they wait for me to reveal the finished product. I love how much fun we have sitting around the table enjoying a meal together. I love to hear their excited chatter as they dig into their dessert first and then move on to the more savory parts of their meal. Baking makes me happy!

Santa Claus Cake

I believe baking is just as joyful activity as it is practical. I believe that everyone should bake, whether you cook or not, and you don’t have to be a professional pastry chef. The techniques I have learned and mastered over years of baking have improved my cooking skills as well as my baking skills. Or maybe it’s the other way around; maybe my cooking skills have improved my baking skills.

Boy Enjoying His Food

I can say without hesitation that my passion for baking has brought me a lot of joy in my life especially when I bake for my family. It gives me such a sense of accomplishment when I get in my kitchen and create something I know that my family is going to love. When they sit down and dig in and I see the look of satisfaction on their faces, well there is nothing in this world like the feeling I get when that happens.

Recipe Book

I have an eleven-year-old granddaughter that loves to bake as well. So, for Christmas, I made her a recipe book with a lot of my recipes to get her started on her baking journey. Some of the recipes I passed on to her were from my mom and my grandmother. She absolutely loves it! It makes me proud to know that I am able to pass along family recipes to my granddaughter. I know she will do great things with them as well because she has that passion for baking as I do.

Lady Rolling Out Dough

If you love to bake or just starting out, I encourage you to continue your journey with baking. There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling than to create a dessert, dish, etc., and watch the people you love enjoying the fruits of your labor. This is what the joy of baking is all about.

Baking Mistakes

Will you make mistakes along the way with your baking? Of course, you will! That is just part of the learning process. I have been baking for 46 years and still make mistakes from time to time. It just goes with the territory. But whatever you do, don’t give up and quit just start over again and use this as a learning curve. It can be frustrating I know, but the next time you won’t make the same mistake again.

Baking Is My Passion

I hope that you will acquire a passion for baking as I have. It will bring joy to your life as it has mine. Once you get bitten by the “baking bug, “there is no turning back. You will love the feeling of knowing that you have made a dish or dessert, that your family is going to love, then the passion and joy of baking will be in your blood. When you see the look of pure satisfaction on their faces, you will know what I mean.

KitchAid Mixer

I hope this will encourage you to take your baking to the next level and never ever give up! The baking world is only a mixer away. Now get your baking on girl and show your family how good you are! You can do this!😊

How to Make Yummy Homemade Biscuits

Yummy Homemade Biscuits
Yummy Homemade Biscuits

As an Amazon Associate, if you should click on any of my links, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

Hey, Ya’ll! Have you always wanted to bake fresh homemade biscuits, but were afraid to try? No worries because I have gotcha covered.

Making homemade biscuits takes me back to my childhood days. I remember my mom fixing homemade biscuits on the weekends when I was a little girl. I couldn’t wait for her to get the dough mixed up and the biscuits cut out and put on the pan and into the oven. I swear I can smell them cooking now! She would put real butter inside those yummy biscuits. After the butter was all melted, then she would call us to come and eat breakfast and we would put grape jelly, apple butter, or apple jelly inside those b-i-s-c-u-i-t-s and honey we would eat like we had right mind!! Of course, we had to have bacon or sausage to go with the biscuits as well.🤤 Ok, back to reality!

Now that I have you nice and hungry, I am going to share with you “How to Make Yummy Homemade Biscuits.” You can do this!

Baking biscuits is very easy and doesn’t take much time. As a Southern girl, I love my bread and sweets! You know, it’s a Southern Thang, ya’ll.

Now, to make all the sweet and savory goodness possible, we need some tools that are good quality and that will last a long time. A heavy-duty stand mixer makes all the difference when baking yummy homemade biscuits. I know they can be expensive, but they are worth their weight in gold.

Of course, if you prefer you can do like I use to do and mix everything up with your hands. That’s what my oldest granddaughter loves to do (she just turned 11). She says she likes to get her hands in there and mix it up real good. I use to, but my hands won’t let me do that anymore. ☹️

1. Tools for Baking Biscuits

KitchenAid Stand Mixer
KitchenAid Stand Mixer
  • As I have said before I love my KitchenAid Stand Mixer. For me it is a life saver and time saver. When I make my biscuits, I also use a “dough blender” before I use my dough hook on my KitchenAid. This helps to get the butterflavored crisco mixed into the flour before I add the other ingredients.

Spring Chef Dough Blender

The Dough Blender is excellent for blending Crisco sticks or butter into your dough before using your dough hook on your stand mixer. I have a dough blender that I really love. It is old and I bought it at an antique store close to me for about $1.50 a couple of years ago. You can use a fork to do this, but personally, I like the dough blender better. You won’t have to work as hard to get the job done.

2. Get Yo Self a Good Recipe

Biscuit Recipe

Get yourself a good recipe for biscuits. This is a very important step to baking yummy soft and flakey biscuits. I have got your back on this one as well. I have a recipe that is soooo yummy. For my yummy biscuit recipe go here>>>Southern Buttermilk Biscuits<<< This is the only recipe you will ever need!🤤

3. Follow the Recipe

Follow The Recipe

I know I have said this before and I am saying it again, follow the recipe! It is the most important step of all. If you do this one simple step, it will save you much time and money and you will go on to be a wonderful baker with any dish you want to create.

4. Gather the Ingredients

Gather The Ingredients
Gather the Ingredients

Get your White Lily Self-Rising Unbleached Flour, (or whatever flour you use), Butter Flavored Crisco Stick(s), Whole Buttermilk, and real butter to melt and put on top of biscuits and inside of them.

5. Measure the Ingredients

Measure Out Your Ingredients
Measure Out Your Ingredients

It’s better to go ahead and measure out everything before you start the mixing process. This helps to save you time and ensures that you are following the recipe correctly and makes mistakes less likely to happen. Trust me, once you start doing this process, it will become second nature to you and you will be glad that you did.

6. Mixing Everything Together

Now comes the best part, mixing it all together one ingredient at a time. First, you want to pour the measured out White Lily Self-Rising Unbleached flour into your mixing bowl, Second, add the butter flavored Crisco, now take a dough blender and mix it into the flour until it’s crumbly. Doing this before using a mixer will help it to mix up better. Third, add the whole buttermilk and mix until well incorporated. This is where I like to use my KitchenAid mixer with dough hook attachment, especially if I am fixing a lot of biscuits.

7. Roll the Dough and Cut them Out

Now that you have everything all mixed up it’s time to roll out the dough and cut them with a biscuit cutter. Once you get the dough all rolled out and the biscuits cut out, it’s time to spray Pam cooking spray or Baker’s Joy cooking spray on the iron skillet. Pre-heat your oven from 450 degrees F. to 500 degrees F. Now place the biscuits on the iron skillet of your choice and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Once they are done butter the biscuits and add jelly, apple butter or whatever you like. Enjoy!

8. Get an Iron Skillet

You have to have an iron skillet if you want your biscuits to turn out soft and fluffy. I have several iron skillets of various sizes and I have a couple of dutch ovens too. If you like, you can purchase these at an antique store. As a matter of fact, some of the iron skillets I have I purchased at my local antique store. You can buy a set as well.

9. Other Tools (Last Minute Thought)

I’m going to add these just in case you would like to use these tools.

Biscuit Cutter

  • Biscuit Cutter is an excellent tool if you want to roll your biscuit dough out and then cut out your biscuits. My preference is to use a fork and scoop some up and roll them into a ball and pat them out in my hand. But if you are new to making biscuits, then you may want to roll them out and use a biscuit cutter to get the size you want. Most of mine are kinda on the big side and some are a little smaller (that’s why it’s called homemade😉). The decision is up to you.

Classic Wooden Rolling Pin

  • Rolling Pin is an excellent choice for rolling out your biscuit dough, cookie dough, pie crust, and pastry dough. This of course is your choice regarding rolling out your biscuit dough. I will tell you that you will need one of these for your cookie dough, pie crust, and pastry dough. I have the classic wooden rolling pin because it’s easy to use and clean up is a breeze.

It has been my pleasure to write this article for you and I hope you enjoyed it. If you follow these 5 simple steps, you will be on your way to knowing “How to Make Yummy Homemade Biscuits.”

I will be honest with you, it may take you a few times of making these, but PLEASE don’t be discouraged and give up! You know the old saying “Practice makes perfect” and there is a lot of truth to this statement.

Tips from Donna’s Kitchen

Tip #1 If your dough is a little sticky, (and it most likely will be) put a little flour on your hands and that will keep it from sticking to you. Also, if you opt to roll them out, you will need to dust your surface with a little flour as well and put some on your rolling pin.

Tip #2 The least you handle your biscuit dough the lighter and flakier your biscuits will be.

FYI: The most expensive thing you will buy is going to be the stand mixer, but if you are just starting out, get one that will fit your budget and your needs. I started out with a Black and Decker handheld mixer. It was good for me at the time and then I decided I wanted a KitchenAid, so I got it.

Always do what is best for you and suits your needs! Don’t want a whole set of Iron skillets, go to an Antique store and get the size that best suits you. Most of all enjoy baking. You are going to make mistakes, so what? I’ve been baking for 46 years and still mess up. Use the mistakes as learning tools and keep on baking!😉

Happy Baking,
